The old station in Lekunberri, which houses the Tourist Office, can be reached by the A-15 motorway.
The Tourism Consortium is also located at the station with a shop selling handmade articles and an exhibition of slides which take in the main tourist and cultural attractions of the area. The station buildings were reopened in their new capacity as offices in June 1998.
" THE STATION ".- The building offers services related with tourist and rural development.
Ground floor: The Tourist Office: currently the Tourist Office is run by the Plazaola Tourism Consortium in conjunction with the Government of Navarre’s tourism services and the network of tourist offices in the area. Ana Andueza is in charge of the office.
Traditional Crafts Shop: offering products made by local craftspeople including farmhouse produce: cheeses, honey, cider and jams; and decorative items: wood carvings, “kaikus” (traditional buckets for making junket), “kutxas” (decorated wooden trunks), leather and wooden articles in pokerwork (the art of burning a design onto leather or wood using a heated metallic point), pottery, pictures made from dried flowers and leather articles.
1st Floor: The Plazaola Tourism Consortium headquarters: the director, Maitena Ezkutari, and the secretary, Asun Arribillaga, are based here. Offices: There are other offices and personnel based in the buildings: the regional development agency, the professional advice service, "Bitarte" from Cederna-Garalur and the company "Cuevas de Astitz" S.L. 2nd floor: Conference room: designed for presentations, group activities, conventions, etc. At present there is an exhibition on rural sports.
"EL ALMACEN ".- The building adjacent to the station houses a projection room and aims to provide a meeting point for visitors who are new to the area with the following presentations.
The Plazaola DVD Resume: is a presentation offered by the Tourism Consortium which aims to incorporate all of the resources available in the area: local culture, mythology, lifestyles, tourist services, peaceful settings, modern elements, etc... An Exhibition on the History of the Train is also based here and presents many of the happenings and events from the Plazaola’s heyday.
The station buildings were renovated by Lekunberri Town Council as part of the project for the recovery of the old Plazaola railway track, and were finalised with the help of the Government of Navarre’s Tourism Department and the State Department of Tourism.
Lekunberri is one of the most significant localities in a journey through Navarre; in the streets of the old town huge old houses can be seen with their respective coats of arms, witness to the quality of life enjoyed in the area. It is also an important communications point as it is situated at the foot of the Aralar mountain range overlooking the River Larraun.
From Lekunberri you can visit the previously mentioned Aralar mountain range, the source of the the River Larraun, the old Betelu livestock route, the Araitz, Ultzama and Basaburua valleys and the recreation area of the Orgi Oak Grove".
